
Meet Molly
Molly Spaeni MS, LMFT
Molly Spaeni (she/her) is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. Molly attended Edgewood College where she received a Bachelor's degree in Studies in Education and a Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Molly was trained in Systems Theory and believes the symptoms an individual experiences are not always a reflection of the individual alone, but may be a product of the environment, family, and relationships the individual is a part of. In order for one’s issues, concerns, or symptoms to change, the system the individual is a part of must also change.

Molly has experience working with anxiety, depression, trauma, perfectionism, relationship concerns, disordered eating in-remission, body image concerns, low self-esteem, negative core beliefs, borderline personality disorder, childhood emotional neglect, parenting concerns, attachment, and affected family members. Molly specializes in trauma and EMDR, and most enjoys supporting client's in developing self-awareness around how their past influences current symptoms and behaviors, especially from an inner-child and attachment perspective. Molly's hope for her client's is that they grow to truly understand, trust, and develop a loving relationship with themselves and the world around them even when navigating life's challenges.
Molly has experience working with children and adolescents between the ages of 8 and 17, as well as adults. Molly has experience working with individuals within the neurodivergent population and enjoys providing support to the individual who is neurodivergent as well as the individuals, families, caregivers, and teams that may directly support individuals within this population. Molly also enjoys working with adolescents, young adults/college students, and adults.
Molly accesses several therapy modalities but most enjoys Systems Therapy, Attachment-Based Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Relational Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Solution-Focused Therapy, and enjoys meditation, grounding, and mindfulness skills. In addition, Molly specializes in and enjoys accessing EMDR, an evidence based psychotherapy treatment that targets (life threatening and interpersonal) trauma symptoms, and the negative self-beliefs an individual possesses as a result of the traumatic event(s).
Molly is dedicated to providing a non-judgmental and safe therapeutic environment and fostering a safe and meaningful therapeutic relationship with her clients, which she believes is at the heart of healing.
Molly is an LGBTQIA2s+ affirming and supportive therapist.

Moston Legacy LLC is an attachment-based outpatient mental health practice serving the greater Madison area.

The name "Moston Legacy" comes from the last name of Molly's therapist from childhood and adolescence. When brainstorming names for her outpatient practice, Molly wanted to acknowledge her former therapist who was an essential part of various life events Molly experienced as well as an essential part of Molly's own personal emotional work.

Moston Legacy is a nod not only to the gratitude Molly has for her former therapist, but a nod to the connection and importance of the client-therapist relationship.
what is trauma?
According to the American Psychological Association, "trauma is an emotional response to a near death (natural disaster) or interpersonal event (accident, assault, childhood emotional neglect). Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical. Longer term reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships, and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea.

While these feelings are normal, some people have difficulty moving on with their lives or managing their emotions in the aftermath of trauma". -American Psychological Association

Additionally, according to Bessel A. van der Kolk, M.D., an event becomes traumatic because it overwhelms the brain’s capacity to cope.

In a traditional sense, trauma is largely seen as an event that is life threatening. In a non-traditional sense, emotional/relational trauma can occur as a result of relationship dynamics, for example. Meaning, the brain doesn't know the difference between an emotional attack versus a physical attack and, therefore, an event that wouldn't ordinarily seem to be traumatic to some, can indeed be traumatic. Even a perceived emotional attack can be traumatic to someone.

What to Expect...
History Taking
In this phase, the provider and the client build rapport, discuss symptoms, and identify issues of concern. This includes identifying various past and/or present life and relationship trauma events that may have contributed to past emotional distress or may be contributing to current emotional distress.
Grounding and Stabilization
During the grounding and stabilization phase, the provider supports the client in practicing and mastering coping skills and strategies that support the client in managing emotional distress in session and outside of session.

Desensitization

During this phase, the provider engages in various EMDR procedures to work towards decreasing distress around trauma events. The provider engages in procedures including supporting the client in identifying negative self-beliefs, memories and images, emotions, and body locations connected to distressing or traumatic events.
Closure
The provider ends an EMDR session by requesting the client track symptoms, notice changes in ability to regulate distress around triggers, and observe changes in self-beliefs in-between sessions.
Reevaluation
At the next appointment, client and provider check-in about any changes or observations the client made between appointments and identify next steps in the EMDR process.
